Bones are used for protection, structure and movement, and also produce blood cells in bone marrow.

The large bone in your head, called the cranium protects the brain and is the structure of the face. The body is made up of two hundred and six bones. Bones can be catagorized as axial bones, bones that keep you upright, and appendicular bones, for movement.

The ribcage is made up of twelve pairs of bones on either side. The ribcage protects the heart, liver and lungs. There are fixed and floating ribs. The fixed ribs are connected to the sternum and the spine, the floating ribs are connected to the vertebrae.

Arms and legs are quite similar. The upper arm is called the femur, also known as the thigh, is the longest bone in the body, it is connected to the fibula and tibia.

The pelvis or hips is a ball and socket joint, like the clavicle. There are hinge joints in the knuckles, wrist, elbow, knee and ankle.

You can keep your bones strong by getting calcium, and sunshine for vitamin D.
