Internet Safety Talk Oct '23
2nd to 6th class had a very informative and engaging workshop on Internet Safety with facilitator Ger Brick recently. We learned the following:
*That our passwords should be strong
*How to screen record or screen capture of we receive nasty comments
*How not to share our location when we download a new App
Ger gave us some useful catch phrases too:
*A friend of a friend is not a friend of mine
*Don't be mean behind the screen
Lots of valuable advice for all of us when using the Internet

Recent upgrade of IT in Senior Room
(Spring 2023)
Pupils in the Senior Room are enjoying the addition of eight new iPads for classroom use.
This Promethean Active Panel was installed in the Senior Room in March and pupils have been enjoying lots of interactive learning since through a variety of Educational Apps and Software.
Our school laptops are wonderful for research, presentation-powerpoint, word, prezi and online games in all subject areas.
Application for Digital Schools of Distinction Award
Redwood N.S is a two teacher rural school located just off the main Birr-Portumna road beside the historic Redwood Castle. We currently have 29 pupils enrolled in our school.
Having had interactive whiteboards in both classrooms; we looked to update in the area of laptops and iPads, and purchased 5 x laptops and 4 x iPads four years ago. These were supplemented last year with 3 x laptops and 2 x iPads. We also updated our printers to a combined printer/ photocopier / scanner system to which all of our ICT equipment is linked wirelessly to.
We communicate in the main with our parents through textaparent and by email. We connect with our school community through our active Facebook account and Twitter account which were both set up four years ago.
Our website is kept up to date with happenings in the school. School policies and information are all updated on a regular basis and are available to view on the school website, www.redwoodns.ie.
We recently updated out ICT Policy, Acceptable Usage Policy and our Social Media Policy and these have been shared with parents.
ICT is integrated across all curricular areas as part of our Whole School Plan.
In the junior room, iPads are used regularly in Aistear (Learning through Play), they have literacy and numeracy games and apps uploaded onto them such as Jolly Phonics, Math Splat, Math Bingo, Mathmateer, Sightwords and so on. Our iPads are also used to explore making movies through iMovie in the junior room. Last year they created ‘Cé tusa?’ on iMovie which was shown to our school community at our open evening and was posted to our Facebook account.
Our extensive list of fully licensed software in use on the interactive whiteboard includes Bua na Cainte, Operation Maths, Jolly Phonics and Grow in Love.
In the senior room, iPads and laptops are also used to do curricular research. The iPads are uploaded with suitable lieracy and numeracy apps and games such as King of Maths, Maths jump, Geoboard, Timestables etc. The laptops are used for typing, coding, making movies on movie maker, kahoot, geo guesser, Scratch etc along with word processing, creating presentations etc. The pupils make history documentaries, short films in Irish and create their own sketches with iMovie on the iPads.
Staff have taken part in ICT related professional development courses.
